In the dark of night, Nicodemus came to Jesus seeking spiritual counsel. He sensed in Jesus the possibility of new life. Jesus' surprising answer was that Nicodemus needed to be "born anew." He invited Nicodemus to explore the possibility of living his life fresh out of the box. This invitation required Nicodemus to reexamine his traditional assumptions and ways of doing things.

When we as the church re-examine our ways of worship, our tendency is to find something that works, box it up and label it "contemporary." Eventually, as the culture around the church changes, contemporary becomes tradition and tradition becomes stale. Worship traditions and forms need continual refreshing.
